Held the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM ET online. Viewing the film prior to the discussion is recommended.

Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley in “House of Sand and Fog”

Mimesis at the Movies is a live open-to-all video-teleconferenced conversation that meets under the auspices of Theology and Peace. We meet on the first Thursday of each month to discuss a film suggested by a participant. We are looking to share beautiful films with one another, we are on the look out for stories that depict interpersonal growth nurtured by shared desires.

On March 7, we’ll discuss House of Sand and Fog, a 2003 drama film directed by Vadim Perelman, with a screenplay written by Perelman and Shawn Lawrence Otto. It is based on the novel of the same name by Andre Dubus III.

The story concerns the battle between a young woman and an immigrant Iranian family over the ownership of a house in Northern California, which ultimately leads to the destruction of five lives. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Supporting Actress (Shohreh Aghdashloo), and Best Original Score (James Horner).

Registration is required to receive the discussion link. The tickets are free.

We welcome suggestions of films or topics for future discussions!
