Colloquium on Violence & Religion COV&R is a dynamic, international association of scholars and practitioners from many disciplines who are dedicated to developing, critiquing, and applying René Girard’s mimetic theory. Colloquium members are energized by the potential for renewal in the social sciences and humanities that mimetic theory makes possible. As scholars and practitioners have applied Girard’s insights about the connection between imitation and violence to religious studies, biblical hermeneutics, philosophy, literature, film studies, sociology and anthropology, economics, psychology, political science exciting discoveries and research avenues have become available.
Imitatio was conceived as a force to press forward the consequences of René Girard’s remarkable insights into human behavior and culture. Our goals are:
- Pursue research and application of mimetic theory across the social sciences and critical areas of human behavior.
- Support the education and development of the next generation of scholars leveraging mimetic theory.
- Further the dissemination, translation and publication of key works incorporating mimetic theory.
Imitatio has been a generous sponsor of the Theology & Peace Conference.
The Raven Foundation is committed to making religion reasonable, violence unthinkable and peace a possibility by spreading awareness of the transformative power of mimetic theory. Our goal is to foster peaceful individuals and harmonious communities that will reject scapegoating and violence as ways to form identity and achieve real and lasting peace.
Our primary outreach is through hosting The Raven ReView blog that provides social commentary on current events, politics, religion, scandals, and popular entertainment. We also hold live events for the public to learn directly from scholars applying mimetic theory to literature, religion, history, psychology or peacemaking.
